Cook Along - Rice Cereal
February 11, 2008
Written by: Katie

Everyone has busy days when we can’t make a good healthy breakfast. Or we have kids that can’t imagine not starting the day with a spoon in their hand and milk in their mouth.

Wehani rice is way better for us than cold cereals. I have since banned the nonstick rice cooker from my kitchen. Along with the nonstick griddle.

Just ladle up some rice. See the raw milk in the background?

We allow one small tablespoon of brown sugar. Cinnamon is also sprinkled on.

Pour the delicious raw milk over the rice.

There you go. Not the perfect breakfast but a great place to start. Far less sugar and none of the anti-nutrients that are found in processed grains.

Yum!

Sounds yummy! I love a bowl of rice for lunch, never thought of it for breakfast somehow! Thanks for the tip.

We like hot rice with coconut oil, cinnamon, and sugar, or with red palm oil. So far, we only do brown rice and Basmati rice. I made run to the Chinese market last week on Chinese New Year. DRAT! Haven’t made it back yet.
Good ideas, Katie. You serve it cold or hot?
I also cook everything in cast iron skillets or enamel-coated cast iron pots. I LOVE my Lodge pots and pans!

Hi Katie! I would love for you to write about what mealtimes/namely introducing new foods to your kids - looks like. If I served that for breakfast, I’m pretty certain my kids wouldn’t have quite the pleased look as your little Jonah! When you serve something new like that, do all your kids eat it happily without question! These are the details I’d love to know :)

Hi Katie,
Where do you get the red rice and what is the difference between it and white rice? Why did you ban the rice cooker and griddle?

That looks wonderful! I would also love to know about the griddles, what is the downside of using a non stick pan/griddle?
Thanks!

As you know, other than myself, my family won’t eat rice. We do oatmeal, though, and we get one spoon of brown sugar or sucanat if we have it or pure maple syrup, but the maple syrup would get expensive in a family if 14! That would be a bottle about every two days! I am also at the tail end of ridding my home of non-stick cookware. My first chiropractor told us to do that after he got melanoma that they couldn’t find the source. It eventually took his life, but we learned so much before he died.

Hot rice, cold milk.
It is Wehani rice and I get it at the health food store. It is red and yummy and good for you. I banned them because teflon is bad for you.

So, does Wahini rice really have a popcorny taste?
February 11th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Hmmm…Jen, the kids really are open to just about anything we serve. Probably because we change it up so often on them. Also if we serve something and a child says “I don’t like ____.” I reply happily “Great! More for me!!” and don’t mention it again. 99.9% of the time the child decides to have a small bowl instead of go hungry. :)
I don’t think the Wehani tastes popcorny. I’ll have Jeff try to describe it. Debbie?

I am going to call my health food store and see if they have any of your beloved rice… I have a large bucket about half full of brown, but you have peaked my interest… ;)
And so what are you cooking it in now? Your big roaster? hee hee! :D
Love,
Chas

Where do you buy it? My co-op (azurestandard) doesn’t seem to carry it.

Katie, Is it actually Wehani red rice? I have found Wehani brown rice through my co-op. Although I have to buy 12- 1lb bags, because no one wants to split a case. It is called Wehani aromatic brown and is the only one listed. Would this work?

How about raw honey to replace the sugar? Might even taste yummier that way!

I love the cook a-longs! I grew up on rice and warm milk for breakfast. I plan to try the “RICE” you use. For brown sugar, I take white sugar and add blackstrap molasses. Still kicking all white sugar out of here.
We are loving maple syrup on Grits and oatmeal….Laura

Yum, I’ll have to get some and try it! Brown rice or others are so versatile. Can be sweetened with brown sugar, maple syrup, raw honey, stevia, molasses and or dried fruits/raisins. I also add some coconut oil and various nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almond slivers or slices are great too. Gee coconut is good too, and also love to add chopped apples!
Drool, yum! ;)
